Doa ini berasal dari hadist yang di riwayatkan oleh Imam Nawawi rahimullah yang menuliskannya dalam kitab Al Adzkar, yang menyebutkan bahwa Ali bin Abi Thalib Radhiallahu ‘anhu pernah meriwayatkan bahwa Nabi Muhammad Shalallahu ‘alaihi wa salam, apabila bercermin, beliau membaca doa di atas.
